Volunteer your time and effort to BARCS

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

BARCS is always interested in expanding our volunteer community. No matter what skill or expertise you have, all BARCS volunteers do share one thing – the desire to make a difference.

We have many volunteer opportunities, making it easy for groups and individuals to get involved. If you are interested in volunteering with BARCS, please begin by downloading our Volunteer Application Form*

Upon completion of this form, it must be submitted to BARCS. You may either submit it in person (directions), email the information to info@baltimoreanimalshelter.org, or fax it to 410-783-6266. You may also send it to us via regular mail.


ANIMAL CARE


Adoption Counselor Adoption Counselor

Adoption counselors educate new pet owners and potential adopters and assist with the adoption process. This includes: explaining adoption procedures, educating about animal care (preventative care, food, exercise, training, socialization, crating, grooming, vet visits, etc), reviewing adoption applications, scheduling vet appointments for spay/neuter, follow up calls, paperwork, checking adoption paperwork, and updating pet of the week board.

Cat Caretaker Cat Caretaker

Cat caretakers will assist in keeping the cat area clean and safe at all times, cleaning the cats cages, washing dishes and litter boxes, doing laundry, feeding and medicating the cats, making cat cages cozy by supplying every cage with towels and toys, keeping the litter boxes clean, observing the cats behaviors, socializing and grooming the animals, and helping the escort if assistance is needed.

Dog Caretaker Dog Caretaker

Dog caretakers will assist in keeping the kennel area clean and safe at all times, cleaning the kennels, washing dishes, doing laundry, feeding, medicating, picking up after the dogs, making sure dogs are walked and socialized, observing dog behaviors, grooming the dogs, helping the escort if assistance is needed, and distributing toys, treats, and blankets.

Escort Escort

Escorts will assist potential pet owners with the adoption process. The escort will assist potential adopters in selecting and meeting the right animal for them. Level 2 escorts will assist guest in searching for lost animals. Escorts will also give out information on animal care, answer questions, and give suggestions.

Foster Parent Foster Parent

Foster parents will open their home to an animal until the animal is adopted. Foster parents will be in charge of feeding, exercising, training, socializing and taking care of the animal as if it where their own. They will also be responsible for talking with potential adopters by giving them information about the animal and taking the animal to adoption events. If the animal gets sick in the foster parent's care they are responsible for contacting the foster home coordinator and taking the animal to receive medical attention upon the approval of the coordinator.
Foster parents should know that adopting an animal out to a good home can take just a few days or up to several months.

Pet Locator Pet Locator

Pet locators work at connecting lost and found companion animals with their owners. In addition to reuniting family companions, pet locators will match potential adopters with an animal that fits a desired description. Volunteers will review and update the lost and found information on the board and computer. They will also make phone calls for potential matches or to update files. Level 2 volunteers will search the kennels for potential matches. Pictures of animals will be taken as needed.

Rescue Rescue

Rescuers will assist with all rescue procedures, contact potential rescue groups, and coordinating animal pick-ups. In addition, they will assist with background checks and information gathering for new rescue groups willing to work with the shelter.

Trainer Trainer

Volunteer trainers will train the shelter dogs on basic behaviors utilizing positive training methods. They will also give training tips and advice to potential adopters, pet owners and people who need training assistance. Trainers will also give classes on basic training to staff and other volunteers.

Transporter Transporter

Volunteer transporters will assist taking animals from the shelter to vet appointments, rescues, foster parents, events, etc. Transporters also assist in picking up donations for the shelter.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS


Educator Educator

Volunteer educators will assist in creating handouts for the shelter, shelter events, and education outreach programs. The information will include things like: animal care, shelter services and programs, adoptions, training methods, etc. In addition to creating written material, volunteers will attend schools and outreach events.

Events/Fundraising/Outreach Fundraising

Volunteers will assist with the implementation of shelter events. These events will consist of fundraising events, educational events, outreach events, etc.

Grant Writing Grant Writing

Grant Writers will review grant opportunities for the shelter. They will apply for multiple grants throughout the year.

Newsletter Newsletter

Newsletter volunteers will create ideas, write articles, design layout, update mailing list, edit writing, and take pictures for the newsletter.

Rabies Clinic/Licenses Rabies Clinic

Rabies Clinic Volunteers will assist pet owners, write certificates, collect money, give out information on care animal care, answer questions, etc. Rabies Clinics are held the first Saturday of every month, and 2 additional clinics a year are held off site.


OFFICE


Office Assistant 1 Office Assistant 1

Volunteer office assistant 1 will assist with general office duties: greeting guests, answering phones, taking messages, filing, basic computer work, etc.

Office Assistant 2 Office Assistant 2

Office assistant 2 will assist with: updating the web page/pet-finder, entering adoption pictures, answering general e-mail, entering data (volunteer hours, newsletter list, etc), creating programs, writing thank you letters, and making follow up calls for spay/neuter.

Office Assistant 3 Office Assistant 3

Intake volunteers will assist with the animal drop off procedures. Volunteers will record information about the animal being surrendered. They will also assist in giving options to the person surrendering the animal. The volunteer will be responsible for explaining to the customer the shelter policies and procedures on surrendering.


SPECIAL PROJECTS


Landscaping Landscaping

Volunteer landscapers will assist with gardening, weeding, planting, trash pick-up, and other landscaping projects around the shelter.

Painting Painting

Volunteer painters will assist with painting projects around the shelter.

Volunteer Levels

Level 1 volunteer:

  • Assist with all procedures for adoption animals

Level 2 volunteer:

  • Assist with all procedures for adoption animals
  • Assist with non-animal handling procedures for stray areas (ex: escort, search for lost/found, rescues, cleaning cages after animal has been removed, etc)

Level 3 volunteer:

  • Assist with all procedures for adoption animals
  • Assist with non-animal handling procedures for stray areas (ex: escort, search for lost/found, rescues, cleaning cages after animal has been removed, etc)
  • Has a Rabies Vaccine
  • Supervised while assisting with stray animal handling as directed
