Welcome to the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter, Inc. (BARCS), a non-profit organization created in July 2005 to take over the operations of the city shelter and to work directly with Baltimore City Animal Control. We take in homeless and unwanted animals in Baltimore City. BARCS’ mission is to provide sanctuary for all animals and to promote a more humane community.
Since its inception, BARCS has made many improvements to the shelter and its operations. Each of these improvements have been made with the animals best interest at heart. One of our most recent changes was creating a fund for the rehabilitation of sick and injured animals. This fund allows BARCS to work with local Veterinarians to treat adoptable homeless animals.
In hopes of getting more animals adopted, we recently changed our hours of operation to make the animals more accessible to the public.
BARCS takes in almost 12,000 animals a year and we need your help! Your assistance, whether through adoption, volunteering, or donation will greatly support us in our mission and help find homes for the thousands of animals we receive each year. As a community, we can make a difference in the lives of homeless and neglected animals.
To view a list of animals currently available for adoption at BARCS, please visit our Adoptable Pets page. To view the pets that have already been adopted from BARCS, visit our “Happy Tails” page.

We hope to see you here soon!
